Description

A. GENERAL FUNCTION

Unload, load, and stack cargo at the port, in the yard, and inside the warehouse, towards the stockpile, area/staging area/storage area, in the middle of the warehouse, onto delivery trucks, or vice versa. It is also responsible for organizing cargo that is improperly stacked in the stockpile area.

B. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Standard Operating Procedures

  • Arrive thirty minutes before the shift starts to prepare for work.
  • Wear complete PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) upon entering and while in required PPE areas.
  • Hard hat
  • High-visibility clothing/reflectorized vest
  • Mask
  • Safety shoes
  • Gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Log in and log out at the Operations Resource Department (ORD) before and after the shift using the bundy clock.
  • Sign the Certificate of Attendance at the Motorpool before starting and after the shift.

2. Scope of Work and Duties

  • Communicate with the On-Board Foreman (OBFM) regarding which cargo will be worked on. Ensure that all necessary details for performing the job are understood and clarified.
  • Ensure that the forklift unit is operational, adequately fueled, and in good condition (tires, engine, headlights, backlights, brake lights, horn, brakes, no oil leaks, etc.). Depending on the type of cargo to be handled with the forklift, ensure that the correct type of forklift is used (fork or stub).
  • Be aware of the Safe Working Load (SWL) of the forklift and ensure that the weight of the cargo being handled does not exceed the SWL.
  • Safety First: Safety in every job is the most important rule that must be considered by the warehouse staff. Do not enter areas with significant safety threats, especially with rolling cargo or cargo with unstable foundations, to avoid accidents. Do not park the forklift unit under or near unstable cargo.
  • Check if the counterweight bolt of the unit needs to be removed before lifting it to the warehouse. If necessary, immediately contact the OBFM and the Equipment Control Assistant (ECA) to carry out the required preparations.
  • Ensure that the surroundings and the path of the forklift inside the warehouse where operations are conducted are clean to avoid snagging or hitting sharp or large objects. Ensure that there are no oil spills or other items that could cause accidents.
  • Avoid transferring heavy cargo to distant stockpiles. If possible, use a temporary staging area or hustling truck to prevent damage to the unit’s stub.
  • Carefully handle and properly stack cargo in the stockpile to prevent damage to the cargo or the forklift unit. Follow the guidelines for safe (proper height) stacking of cargo in the stockpile.
  • CRC, HRC: 1-2 tiers
  • Wire rod, sawn timber: 4-5 tiers
  • Steel billets, h-beams, steel plates, steel pipes, round logs: 2-2.5 meters
  • Ensure that the travelling load height of the forklift is six (6) inches while transferring/lifting cargo.
  • Ensure that the height or tier of the cargo is just right to prevent collapsing or rolling of the cargo. This should also be considered when stacking cargo on the delivery truck.
  • In instances where the cargo on the ship is sawn timber and a forklift unit is needed for the work, make sure all preparations are done before starting work – steel plates should be in place where the forklift will be positioned, wedges to level the steel plates, sawdust or sand to prevent the unit from slipping and to keep the cargo beneath clean in case of oil spills or leaks, and other safety regulations.
